And yet another Movie review to keep your nights of random boredom at bay…. If you are looking for a decent “date movie” than look no further than “Remember Me”, starring Robert Pattinson. You may remember Robert Pattinson from the Vampire movies of not so long ago. Yes, yes, I know all the men out there just won’t be caught dead going to see a movie with this strangish, heart throb/teen Dracula/Leonardo DiCaprio version 2.0 actor in it.. but wait… it also stars Pierce Brosnan. Could it possibly be a decent movie? A movie worth seeing? Yes… it is. It is a very well thought out movie, with many sub-plots running simultaneously that fit together perfectly. This is actually quite a good movie. It is a movie worth seeing (but bring a date).
The movie focuses on the 2 lead characters’ opposite, yet strangely similar upbringings, and how they come together in a twist of fate.. with a bit of drama thrown in the middle.
We saw it at AFI Malls’ cinema, on weekdays 2 tickets for 36 ron and a large popcorn and large soda for 19 ron, is a great, affordable start to a night out. Remember, AFI cinemas screens are farther away from the front row than usually because the exit is below and in front of the stage. For the best viewing you’ll want to be in rows 3-5. It’s somewhat amusing to me to ask for these rows when purchasing the tickets because 100% of the time the cashier will “question” your choice of seating due to their opinion of it’s proximity to the screen. I guess Romanians prefer the back of the theatre.
So what about the title of this post… ruined by Monica Columbeanu??? If you aren’t familiar with who she is, it’s okay and it’s you shouldn’t know who she is. She is one of Bucharest’s “local” celebrities… not known outside of Romania really, because she’s pretty much “self-proclaimed”. I would imagine every town has one or two. This is a Moldovan girl who was scooped up by a well-off and elderly Romanian man (Irinel) who became her “sponsor” as they call it. Basically this is Monica’s “meal ticket” and free-ride through the early stages of her life. She was put on a pedestal for so long, via shameless promotions and self-funded media attention (up to and including her own TV network that follows her around) that she lost (assuming she once had) all self-respect and along with it all respect for others. Unfortunately she happened to be in the theatre with us this evening… along with a few other “girlfriends”. They decided that it was “conversation” hour throughout this movie. But the worst part that really left me feeling the need to write, was during a long sequence in the movie referencing September 11th and the World Trade Center attacks. Monica Columbeanu was giggling. Unbelievable and disgusting. I suppose she has not learned about the strange new city of “New York” and the serious events that unfolded there. Well, for that I can understand.

So again, when going to movies, choose the day wisely. Forget about weekends, as you will NOT enjoy the experience. Instead go for weekdays later in the evening, when fewer people attend. AFI is still the better bet, followed closely by Liberty Light Cinema at Liberty Center Mall. And watch out for all the Monicas… thank God they sit in the back though… yet another reason for my “up close” seating choice! Enjoy.
