BP Oil Spill Bucharest Expat Spy Photos

We’re all pretty much “up to speed” on the BP oil spill so we’ll spare you the boring details best suited for “media” outlets… which Bucharest Expat is NOT. But let’s look at something a bit more interesting about this oil spill…

In an attempt to essentially reroute the oil through a “cut” and modification to the lower pipe BP has done nothing more than to increase the rate of “gush” into the ocean. Imagine that.

As of this writing, the most recent update is that the spill is “nearing” the Gulf coast, more specifically the Florida panhandle. Apparently the US news is deceiving us! Who would have imagined such a thing! From a leisurely stroll on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico by one of our “Expats” on his recent trip to the US, we can assure you… the spill has reached the shores. Not only has it reached [all] the shoreline, but the major part of the spill is nowhere NEAR where the US media claims it to be!

The spill is growing exponentially and is ready to spread its love around the world, hooking up with the gulf stream down in the Caribbean where it will hitch a ride north-east through the Atlantic. But that’s not in the news… so it can’t possibly be true right? Well, here’s the proof from our flight recently to the Caribbean. In the pictures below you’ll see the photos from our seats on the airplane on our approach to the Dominican Republic. The size of this thing is massive, and consider that 99% of the spill has “suspended” itself below the surface (imagine mixing oil and vinegar and shaking it up… once the churning stops it will seperate again). So maybe this will make its way back to the Arab Nations where they will of course clean it up, barrel it, and sell it back to the US… hopefully at a nice mark-up! Enjoy…

Thanks for posting the pictures I am still in the US at the moment unfortunately. You are right they are certainly not telling Americans the truth of course most of us knew that already. Can’t wait till the first hurricane tracks it’s way through this mess. That ought to help send it around the globe.

This whole oil spill situation just makes me sick. I am originally from the Georgia coast and though it hasn’t reached there yet it’s coming.

  • dave

These are very interesting and informative pictures and certainly better than any I have seen in the news from home. It saddens me to hear about all of this but those most to blame have got to be the greedy capitalists who need to drill, drill, drill.

  • suzannecarlyle

Wow these are impressive pics, especially to be taken out of a commercial airliner. How is it that nobody else has pics like this, as the spill is huge and really obvious? Looks like BP is going to have a lot of oil-covered shoreline to clean up.

I hear that there has been an earlier spill in Alaska where a corroded pipeline burst and they lost 100k gallons, not an insubstantial amount but overshadowed by this one. BP have a lot to answer for.

  • Thomas

What incredible pictures. I read somewhere today that both BP and the US government have pretty much established a media blackout about this so the only information being let loose is what they want you to hear. According to those who mentioned a black out oil is leaking from multiple other vents in the sea floor. One thing is for sure the environment may never recover from this mess. I feel so bad for the people on the gulf coast.

Amazing pix man! I have been following this and it seems like Obama is having a hissy fit at the Brits. Isn’t BP part owned by Americans now?

  • Kelsey

This just makes me sick and everytime you turn on the news they change the amount that has leaked out into an even larger amount.

Awesome pictures. I’m glad that I’m not in any part of the USA at the moment and if this oil is, as they say, being carried by the Gulf Stream, it will eventually end up on the West coast of Scotland. Has anyone considered that I wonder?

  • Lorna

You are probably right Chelsea. I heard today that Kevin Costner’s company is going to help them clean it up but I am sure they can’t get all the oil out of the water!

  • Carrie

Awesome pictures. THanks for sharing them. This whole thing just makes me sick and now they are reporting that large quantities of methane are leaking out too and that will pretty much be the end to anything that lives in that area of the ocean.

  • Braylen

Great pics! I had heard that about the methane too Carrie and I have to wonder how safe it is for the people living on the coast to be breathing in that crap? I know a lot of the clean up workers have been getting sick.

  • sam70

It’s an impossible situation but what I don’t understand is why they didn’t accept help from the International community when it was first offered. Didn’t the Dutch offer to send clean up machinery when it first happened and wasn’t it refused because the unions didn’t want any but American ships in the water?

  • Jason

Well I don’t want to say awesome pictures because the whole mess is just horrible but it was neat to see some pics from up above. Yes, many many countries with more experience dealing with this kind of thing offered to help and were refused from my understanding.

  • JemimaK

This makes me really sad. It is important that public awareness remains high so thanks for the pictures and the chance to discuss them.

I worry that it will become part of our daily experience if fresh angles are not used to make people get active and do something.

Equally heartbroken for the loss of plant and animal life and the damage to so many people’s livelihoods.

  • Tia

This whole mess is just heartbreaking and I am afraid the damage may be permanent. I did hear today though that the new containment cap looks very promising.

  • BucharestBound

Hoping that this reaches some kind of solution. Thinking longer term, are there any local activist/awareness raising groups in Bucharest? I would like to get involved in something like that when I am able.

  • Shawna

I read this morning that so far the containment cap is holding I hope it continues to work. Thanks for posting these pictures it’s very interesting to see it from the air.
