So what is the truth behind the Viper Tombola in AFI mall? If you have not been yet, you must go and see this. I wandered up there just for something to occupy my time. Above Real Supermarket on the second level in AFI mall there is a 1,176 horsepower Dodge Viper, a display of a KTM 450 SMR motorbike, a nice new example of a Vespa motorscooter, three of the 5 prizes being offered through American Marketing & Branding’s “Viper Tombola”. It seems to be progressing right along up to the April 3rd giveaway. The big question is why? Why is American Marketing & Branding as well as other prime partners (as you’ll see on the car itself now) doing this event? The reason, come to find out, is because of a close affiliation with a charity (to soon be announced at an upcoming event) as well as a way for American Marketing & Branding to kick off the launch of their company. This “kick off” will also be announced shortly, but from what we at Bucharest Expat seem to know so far it is a way for them to introduce some new twists on affordable guerilla marketing techniques to Bucharest (granted there have been tombolas (raffles) here before, none have drawn this much attention and have featured some of the “crowd gathering” techniques as this tombola has). The idea behind AMB is to partner with and hand-hold smaller companies to take them to the bigger leagues. American Marketing & Branding wishes to show companies that may need an extra “boost” in todays economy, that spending tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of Euros on marketing and advertising through “traditional” media and marketing companies is a fool’s game. Check out this event, see the car, talk to the staff, its definitely something you won’t see everyday, and makes for unbelievable photo opportunities. So the People’s Palace (or Palace of The Parliament as it is now referred to, akin to renaming the White House… just doesn’t work) should become a luxury shopping mall? Hhaahhhahaha… what a dumb, ignorant, arrogant.. you name it… idea. The one major landmark of Bucharest that still functions as it was somewhat intended should be turned into something so stereotypically Western and susceptible to market trends as a luxury shopping mall? hahhha again.

But the funny thing? It would probably be packed full of people day in and day out. I would go. You would definitely be able to see the inside of the Peoples Palace and rooms that you’ve never seen before. There is a lot of leasable space inside the mall that is definitely high end (albeit tacky) and there is ample parking underneath. The tax base for Bucharest would massively increase, there are excellent outside terraces for cafe and dining opportunities, it could even be host to some of the greatest nightclubs in the world. Hmmm maybe not such a bad idea after all.

Maybe they just meant people would have the ability to go shopping for Politicians. Who knows. Here are the links to the articles:

The Colosseum: Construction of one of the largest Shopping Centers in Europe will start in Bucharest in Autumn 2009

PUZ for first class European style shopping center approved on August 1st – More than 70 percent of the first phase leased out – Anchor tenants: Carrefour, Flanco, LeroyMerlin

A spectacular shopping and entertainment center will be created in Bucharests Sector 1: The Colosseum Shopping Centre & Retail Park will comprise 140,000 square meters of covered retail space, with more than 480 shops and 8,500 parking spaces as well as 58,000 square meters of Retail Park. The construction works will start in autumn this year on the site of 620,000 sqm in Sos. Chitilei. Building contracts for the Retail Park have been signed with Bouygues, one of the largest international contractors, and work will commence in October 2009.

In the first phase of construction, a retail park will be built – with units ranging from 1,500 sqm to 19,500 sqm on a leasing area of 58,000 square meters. More than 70 % of the retail park is already leased out. Among the tenants are well-known brands such as Carrefour hypermarket, a Flanco store, Altex and a DIY-market of Leroy Merlin.

Upgrade of traffic infrastructure
The investment volume for the whole project will exceed 350 million Euro and is being placed by the company Nova Imobiliare, an English company. Currently Nova Imobiliare is in negotiations with major Romanian and international banks, who are interested in financing the project. The investor of The Colosseum will spend an additional amount of 30 million Euro to improve the surrounding roads and public transport. Upon completion of the Colosseum the upgraded infrastructure will be donated to the community so that all inhabitants will benefit from this development. A modern traffic solution will offer a cosy access to the shopping center. Additionally a bus station and a tram station will be located within the center. More than 2.03 million inhabitants live in the catchment area of 60 minutes.

Project partners
For the realisation of this unique project, the best European and US-American companies, of their class, were engaged to create a team of unrivalled expertise. The architectural planning is carried out by Leach Rhodes Walker architects, one of the leading architecture firms in UK and Romania. Interior design is created by Darrell Schmitt Design Associates from Los Angeles, California. Leasing and long-term center management of The Colosseum is carried out by ECE Projektmanagement, European market leader for inner city shopping centers. The extensive planning of the transportation and technical structure is conducted by the international engineering companies Waterman International and WSP Group.

The long story on the “publicity details” here is that we now have a more “Americanized”, or “Westernized” supermarket that we’ll feel comfortable, as well as productive in. Whether you are at the deli counter, the bakery section, the fruits and vegetables area, or the wine section, you’ll notice that there are a bit more “service oriented” employees that make your shopping experience more enjoyable and interactive as well…. again, something more akin to the American “upper end” supermarkets.

Vitan mall is still the best of them all, with a little bit of everything at pretty much every price point. They have a decent food court, a Starbucks with an outdoor terrace, a media galaxy on the top floor for all your electronics needs, a great cinema, and even some after hours billiards halls upstairs.
