And yet again the US embarrasses us all in its’ plans for the “new and improved” US embassy. First of all… why? What was really wrong with the first embassy… land lease expired? Yeah… uh huh. The big prison-esque structure behind the Intercontinental is going by-bye, at least as its’ dual purpose “venue” is it is now. The US has decided (as its ties weaken) that their footprint on foreign soil must grow larger and much more apparent. Ah, may we have a beautiful, architecturally pleasing Embassy like EVERY OTHER COUNTRY ON THE PLANET HAS? Nope.. we are the US and we insist on building a hideous, sterile, institutionalized fortress simply because we don’t care (oh, and by the way, we’ve pissed off so many countries we can’t have windows and walls any less than 4 meters thick)! So why is it that the US can’t build a “nice” embassy? Why does the security have to be so tight? It’s just my opinion of course, but I think they have something to hide and even more to be worried about… EVERY country I’ve been to seems to have their fair share of aesthetically pleasing embassies, until you get to the American “shelter” of an embassy, that always looks just plain ridiculous. It’s like the US just can’t stop taking big giant “craps” on whoever and whatever it happens to “grace” with its presence.

Now granted some may look at this picture and wonder what all of my complaining is about. They also may think to themselves that placing this in Baneasa is reasonable, as it is convenient for random escapes to the newly privatized airport, or be pleased in the fact that this is being built with 2 levels in order to “save space”. You may also want to let me know that the “reason” US embassies are fortresses is to protect against those evil foreign citizens that wish to harm all who believe in personal freedom. But again.. all just opinions. Seek Alternate Route From Baneasa

Just an annoyance that you’ll have if you’re coming into town. Forget about turning left into town after the Baneasa Airport. The tunnel construction (due for end of year completion) for some reason beyond the scope of reality has prohibited a left turn at that specific intersection, as well as ANY U-turn from there all the way to Charles de Gaulle. You’re looking at a nice jaunt to the next piata or round about before you can come back in the other direction. If you’re headed towards the center, you’ll probably do just fine, however if you’re heading towards Pipera, (or even staying at the Pheonecia) it will be a pain in the butt. If you plan accordingly you could take the bypass prior to Baneasa Shopping city and cut through the residential areas, which will then inevitably spit you out in Pipera.

For those of you that enjoy some humor, you may actually wish to drive by the tunnel construction during mid-day just to see some of the Romanian workers down on there hands and knees brushing away the concrete overages with tiny toothbrush sized brushes. I wonder why it takes three times longer than average for construction. huh

Shopaholics Take Note…

If you’re like me, you always need to take a tour of the finer boutiques and check out the prices…Take a stroll down Victoriei to start, near the Hyatt and the new Radisson to spot some trendy boutique shops. There is a new mall over near the Ikea at Baneasa, probably the most American style mall around here, but it seems to be pretty deserted during the weekdays. Unless you have a dire desire to see this complex, or happen to be in the area, I would advise against going, as the traffic returning on the parkway into town is miserable. Expect an hour to go 3 kilometers. They’re in the process now of digging a new tunnel, so it creates some chaos.

Vitan mall is still the best of them all, with a little bit of everything at pretty much every price point. They have a decent food court, a Starbucks with an outdoor terrace, a media galaxy on the top floor for all your electronics needs, a great cinema, and even some after hours billiards halls upstairs. Check it out!

The real gems are the hole in the wall shops and stores… let us know what’s out there to see everyone!
