The “Pub” wave is definitely spreading across Bucharest. Is it a case of “monkey see, monkey do” or is there a true demand for a cold Pint and some grub? Only time will tell, and those who can swing the hefty rental rates in old town Lipscani will be the first to weigh in. Spend an evening and take a walk though Lipscani and see what you see. Seems like every night you go down there something “new” that you didn’t notice before has opened up doesn’t it? We have Bordello’s, the popular hangout that is the talk of the town, we have St. Patrick’s with most likely the most stunning facade of woodwork this side of the river, and Vintage Pub, what seemed like a “me too” Pub until they nailed down what appears to be a pretty cool theme and an enjoyable atmosphere. But keep walking and keep looking. You’ll notice a few more welcome additions to the pub scene. But its not just in old town Lipscani that the Pubs are popping up… scattered around town you’ll find some coffee shop conversions, some buyouts and retrofits, some international twists on what one assumes to be a pub (the latter is more of an attempt more than anything else). Whether it is to specifically target the growing demographic of English coming to Bucharest or to become the epitome of what one believes “every other great city” is, Pub owners clearly feel there remains a niche to fill in Bucharest. Hopefully for their financial sake they are correct. Until then it remains a competition for clientele. Who will pour the perfect pint? Who serves the best snacks at the most reasonable price? Who has the greatest ambience? Where is the best service? Which pub is the most consistent in all these aspects? As if the euro-dance clubs just aren’t enough for you or have become a “little monotonous” then you are in luck! Salsa dancing is here in Bucharest.. finally! The best part?? You’ll be enjoying yourself in “old town” Lipscani.

SALSAFIT Dance Studio is inviting you to Cuban salsa classes (and other club latin dances based mostly on improvisation, spontaneity and creativity), for those people interested in making new friends, adding variety to their routine, relaxing and learning how to dance at the same time – not for performance purposes but for fun. Grand Cafe Vangogh

We’ve had more than a few searches on this site regarding Grand Cafe Vangogh. So here it is… This cafe is located in the recently renovated area of “old town” Lipscani. Cafe Vangogh sits within an impeccably renewed 1920′s multi-level building. The triple crown moulding and beautifully vaulted ceilings are reminiscent of typical belle époque architecture with a typical Parisian flair. The great part about Vangogh Cafe Bucharest is the amount of interior space and its multi-purpose use. When walking in (yes it is walk-in… no reservations needed… it is first come first serve here) you’ll be greeted by the friendly staff, the impressive bar area, and the stunning interior architecture. No original Vangogh pieces here though.. too bad. The only downside is it does get a bit crowded and the tables are cluttered together. Food is decent, not the best in Bucharest, but fitting for the venue. Pricing is on the higher side, but try ordering the cheese plate for 27ron, its great for a table of four. Great drink? Try the fresh lemonade with brown sugar. Best I’ve had in Bucharest.

Vangogh Cafe is split into a ground level, upper level and lower.. or basement level. Make a point to walk to the back of the building and go up the staircase to glance at the “business center” and meeting/conference room. Go to their website link at the bottom of this page to get rate info, as it changes. Down the spiral staircase takes you inside “the vault” which is the cozy wine room where you (at a price) can sit and enjoy great wines and cheeses.

If you’re looking for a great place to go with some friends or business associates then you almost can’t go wrong here. We’ve been there probably a half dozen times and truly not had a negative experience. Look next door at the Rembrandt Hotel as well… these are two truly nice buildings adjacent to each other.

In the past year, especially during the latter part of Summer 2010, we saw Lipscani surge in growth yet again. With the opening of many new restaurants (some extremely good), new coffee shops and new bars, the selection and variety of dining and entertainment options can keep you busy for many nights at a time. Although these new venues are up and running, the hot spot still seems to be Grand Cafe Van Gogh. If you haven’t been there yet this place is a must see. The interior details, fit and finishes truly are remarkable, and the wine cellar downstairs is worth a look. Go in off the streets on a cold winter day and cozy up to a warm cup of coffee, or in the summer try their naturally sweetened lemonade, you won’t regret it! Grand Cafe Van Gogh will soon be featured on our up and coming site www.LipscaniBucharest.com as will the adjacent Hotel Rembrandt.

Sheesha at Egypt & A Walk Around Lipscani

As spring taunts us for a few hours every day now, and we have the occasional warm evening, I figured it was high time we headed over for a “nice” comfortable evening walk around Lipscani. The street-side tables are beginning to blossom, as the national flower of “old town” seems to be the cafe umbrella… they’re planted everywhere. We parallel parked our car along the curbside on Calea Victoriei, which is a ten meter walk, if that into the “entry” of Valea Regilor, the unique (at least to us “new urban” minded Americans) covered alley-turned-cafe-tunnel that walks you directly in to old town Lipscani. So we meandered our way through the ordered chaos of partial renovations and jumping hot-spots to see “what’s new”. With a peak into some of the shops and a brief walk past the Irish Pubs and Sushi “bars” we wound up right back at Valea Regilor to sit down and relax at Egipt; the casual pseudo-arabic themed lounge/sheesha bar/cafe for a cheap Nargila and beer. It was more crowded than usual, and required reservations, but we were able to wrangle up a table. For the budget minded, this place is IT. I ordered an Ursus Black beer, half a liter, for 7 lei. Can’t beat that. Our nargila, that lasted longer than we could smoke, was 11 lei. With everyones drinks the total came to less than 40 lei, so cheaper than cheap for a group night out. So being that this was a monday night and the place was packed full, it may be becoming enough of a haven that reservations will become almost mandatory. Call ahead and book your table.

We took a lovely stroll round Lipscani the other evening in search of a cold beer, a bit of nice music and perhaps some pleasant food, and guess what, we found all in Swing restaurant in the lower section of Lipscani next to Ohara`s..

A very smokeless atmosphere with a mixture of excellent music prompted us to stay and have another beer and order a meal. While the restaurant carries no specific theme, it does have some great “antique postcard” wall covering with old-feel laminate plank flooring, and really, really cool looking menus (bring your reading glasses though).

We deliberately ordered, for the benefit of our readers a wide range of food from Carne la borcan cu mamaliga si usturoi (pig cooked, stored in fat then finished off when ordered) very, very nice crispy pig!! Mamaliga, well I have always said it tastes like the foam seat Â from the back seat of an old Dacia , but others here said it was excellent..I had Chinese chicken and was suitably impressed, the service was decent, but carried a Romanian twist. We ordered an appetizer of Brushetta, and wera caught a bit off guard when the plate came. We had asked the quantity (as there were four of us) and he told us it was an order of four. Perfect. When the order arrived, we received 3… where was the 4^th one was,? as they were in triangles cut from a square piece of bread! Â â€œaahh thatâ€™s for the next portionâ€… I love this place!!!!

It actually was amusing, seeing the waiter gave the worst excuse in the world.

This aside, we had a very pleasant evening, and as I said, plenty of smokers, but smoke free..

Well worth trying for a bite to eat. Also of note… check out the “way cool” upstairs which is a newly opened bar, full of nice open door rooms and cuddies, ideal for a weekend evening out, we will report more once we know!

If you’re looking for a change of pace from the everyday shaorma then try Bucharest’s “twist” on mexican food. Open until 2 am, Tortilla is a great place to grab a late night bite to eat inside as well. The decor is clean and trendy, and you can sit at a four place high top table, or right up front at the “bar”.

Here’s what you’ll get…. you’re choice of tacos or “tortillas” which are basically a fresh ingredient version of a burrito. The flour “ball” is pressed between a heat press right in front of you , then you have your choice of meat and toppings to be added. My pick is the Pastrami extra spicy with all the toppings. Throw in some chips (french fries) and a drink and it will set you back about 22 ron. It’s a bit more expensive than the shaorma but it’s well worth the money. They will deliver to areas around Unirii.

Sunday through Thursday 11 am – 2am

Friday & Saturday non-stop
