    On March 18th there will supposedly be a Metro strike in Bucharest. This has happened quite often, a memorable one being in 1999 when drivers went on strike demanding the average $113 equivalent monthly salary be doubled. This time, after listening to the “rumor mill” saying everything from their will be 10,000 cars intentionally blocking the road while the public transportation lines are blocked, to the “everybody will miss school and work”, to “we wish to create another Greece”, we’ve searched various media sources to find out the “probable” scenario for this strike: It looks like what is going to happen, is that on the 18th of March, as announced by the president of the trade unions of the Metro, 4,600 employees will strike, halting the main metro line “indefinitely”. As a result of this Bucharest Public Transportation Strike, more people will be driving their cars to and from their destinations. As is already well known around Bucharest, the traffic can be miserable at times. Most of the time. So if you drive or will be planning to drive as a result of this be SURE to give yourself ample time to get to your destinations just in case. If you can take the tram or are within walking distance you may be better off. Let’s see what happens!

    • ]]>     Well, it’s still snowing out there, and if you’ll take a look at the webcams on our site (click here) you can “judge” which driving routes look as though they’ll be less likely to have ice on them. Yesterday being the first day of snowfall in Bucharest, there was a time for “adjustment”. The roads were very slick… I actually followed one of the plow trucks with a “gritter” attachment, sprinkling the salt around on the roads, but the mechanism was clogged, so he was only salting the back of the truck. Wonder who’s paying for that.

    Unirii Snow

    Sitting in traffic was ofcourse a nightmare. an hour from Mihai Bravi to Unirii…lol. That evening I thought I would be “smart” and park the car and take the metro. Turns out everyone else in Bucharest wished to be “smart” as well, so the metro was like herding cattle and took a long time, and the roads had freed up. My solution? Stay at home. If you have to go somewhere, take your car, but search wisely for alternate routes and back roads. Don’t plan on taking the tram or the bus until you confirm they are running at proper schedule. If you are close to a metro station, pop your head down there first to gauge the crowds. Remember: riding in the Metro in close proximity to everyone puts you at risk of being pick pocketed during the holidays.

    • ]]>     bucharest-mapHi Everyone! Great resource here, can’t wait for the newsletter… I’ve bookmarked this site. Never been on the trams either, so I can’t speak for them. I do stick with the taxis and the metros as well. This map here came off the web of course, and I will say to check with the metro as well for an up-to-date map, as I dont know if this one has all the stations.

At roughly 1,5 lei per kilometer for the average taxi ride, you’re on par with some of the cheaper taxi trips in Europe. For 20 lei ($8-ish USD) you can take a tour of the city. Just be prepared to sit in traffic for an ungodly amount of time. The taxi companies that I tend to use are Cobalcescu and Aris. Taxi 2000 is decent and there are others. Be sure you know the rates that are posted on the side, make sure they don’t charge more at certain hours of the day, and never get in a taxi that solicits you. I could go on all day on taxi’s so look for my article in the up and coming newsletter about taxi rip offs, how to avoid them and what if…

    Taking taxis is of course just one option. Have you tried the metro? It is actually an excellent subway system, with some of the tunnels and stations recently renovated. For a hair over 2 lei you get a two way passage, with unlimited transfers if for some reason you would need more than one. Safety is almost not a concern on the metro, but as always, wallets in your front pocket and arm over purses. No reason to “give away” your belongings.

    I have used a bus a few times now, as some days I am entirely to pissed off at traffic to even attempt to drive. The bus is stop and go, which gets annoying, you do have to know which numbered line gets you where and to what stops, they have recently begun selling only 2 tickets at once, it gets hot on the bus in the summer, and it is crowded. No thanks for me.. I’ll stick with the metro and its more “restricted” stations. I can walk 100 meters difference in a shorter period of time than the bus routes anyways.

    Rental Cars? When I first cam here I rented a cheapy diesel Yaris out of Baneasa airport. It was 40 euros a day and got me around. I will never rent a car again for use only in the city. Where it did come in handy was trips outside of Bucharest. Look in the business directory for my reviews and recommendations for the best source of short term vehicle rentals for foreigners. This is a touchy business, as the prices vary wildly from what is actually advertised.
