Taverna Sarbului
There are quite a few “Romanian” restaurants around Bucharest. Some serve traditional Romanian and regional cuisine while others only “claim” to. Our favorite Romanian dining option is Taverna Sarbului. This is as close to home-cooked Romanian food as you can get. Situated over near the “Free Press” piata, the tribunale area, you’ll see the “lodge” style Taverna. With open seating areas both indoors and out, you’ll be able to have a cozy romantic dinner, or a nice business lunch, whatever your desire (yes they even have wi-fi). The meals are very substantial portions, and almost all starters or appetizers are enough for two people. The service is excellent, the staff is very attentive and always “making sure” you’ve got everything you need and your table is clear. Don’t miss the schnitzels and the soups. Pricing is on the reasonable side, with virtually any meal being around the 30 lei range, but the menu is quite large with many options available.

Avalon
Avalon
Fine dining at it’s finest. Located in the Howard Johnson Plaza behind Piata Romana, this is definitely an upscale treat. Avalon is located on the upper lobby level next to Benihana restaurant. Don’t get confused between Benihana and Avalon as they are in extreme proximity to each other. Avalon is an upscale “white-table cloth” restaurant perfect for making a great impression. With a wide variety of wines, a very formal staff, and a world-class chef, you are in for a treat here. Prices are on the high side, but worth every penny. Check their website before hand to see the chef’s daily specials. Walk-ins work, but reservations are better.

Dristor Kebap (Shaorma)
Dristor Kebap
What good would coming to Bucharest be without eating a Shaorma every now and then? There are Kebab and Shaorma stands just around every corner in Bucharest, so how do you know which one is the best? Follow the crowds! Dristor Kebap is locally famous in its; own right, with multiple locations scattered around Bucharest. Why do we like them? FLAVOR! With the perfect balance of seasoning, meat, french-fries, add-ons, sauces, and even jalepeno peppers if you desire these “large” shaormas can feed you for two meals. At 15 ron for a meal including french fries you cant go wrong. (Of note, the Dristor Kebap on Dimitri Cantemir Blvd has a 24 hr currency exchange in the same structure… with great rates).

El Bacha
El Bacha
If you are familiar with Bucharest, El Bacha was the GOOD Mediterranean (specifically Lebanese) restaurant that used to be located in the Marriott Hotel. They have been replaced by a “not so great version”… so we’ve followed El Bacha to their other locations at Alba Iulia and Pipeira. At first glance one might expect El Bacha to be expensive, especially being housed within the Marriott at one time. The reality is a great meal can be had at around 30 ron per person if you do the “family style” meal. They have a wide variety of both hot and cold appetizers/starters, as well as a great selection of grilled food or “main dishes”. We normally arrive with four people, each ordering just one dish (either starter or main dish) and center them in the table and pick and choose. No matter what you can’t go wrong with an order of the yoghurt (labneh) and some pita bread.
